  • Ohio River Bridges Project
The Bridges Project, a bi-state project, is managed by officials from Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) and the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT). A Bi-State Management Team of these officials oversees work completed by the general engineering consultant, Community Transportation Solutions (CTS) and the six design teams on the project. Each state has a project manager specifically for this project. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) also reviews the work of CTS and the Bi-State Management Team.

The design work on the project is divided up into six sections, which include each of the two bridges and each of the bridge approaches on either side of the river. Each section design team focuses on the character and needs of the communities in their section.

The project consists of a bridge on the east, a downtown bridge and a re-work of spaghetti junction.

One Southern Indiana supports an accelerated construction schedule to keep costs from skyrocketing.

  • State and Local Government Reform
The Indiana Commission on Local Government Reform, a bipartisan group commonly known as the Kernan-Shepard Commission, studied local government in Indiana and in December 2007 issued a report with 27 specific recommendations to cut bureaucracy and streamline government.

    • The recommendations deal with issues such as creating a clearer, more accountable structure with fewer elected officials.
    • Better coordinated public safety services.
    • Transferring all present township responsibilities to the county executive.
    • Establishing school districts that are large enough to provide high-caliber education at a lower cost and enhance fiscal accountability.
    • Strengthen accountability of elected officials, and eliminate the costs of separate cities and towns elections.
    • Establish library districts that are large enough to provide high-caliber services to every Hoosier at a lower cost, and improve fiscal accountability.
    • Encourage additional voluntary action to increase efficiency and effectiveness.

One Southern Indiana supports streamlining government to keep taxes at a minimum and to make it easier to do business in Indiana.

  • State Taxation Policy
The permanent reduction of property taxes for all property taxpayers and control of the future growth of property taxes are critical to the long-term growth of our state. However, authorizing differential caps in our Constitution is not prudent. Property tax reform should include enhancing the authority of local government units to generate revenue through alternative sources. Such legislation should give local officials more control over the management and responsibility over their own fiscal affairs, but also be structured to control expenses and debt, promote greater structural and operational efficiencies and protect taxpayers from budget increases that out pace the rate of the inflation. Funding obligations should correspond to the statutory authority the governmental unit has to control the operations of the governmental function being funded.
  • Workforce Education
Qualified and skilled workers that reflect the needs of the business community are essential to economic growth and community development. We support the establishment of state tax credits to be applied to business income tax liabilities for qualified employer-funded employee training programs and for work-based learning initiatives conducted in partnership with local school corporations, public or private training programs and/or institutions of higher learning.
